Gary T. Kimmel, M.D.
Founder and Chairman Emeritus
Gary. T. Kimmel, M.D. is the founder and chairman emeritus of the Cancer Foundation For Life® (CFFL), reporting to the Board of Directors. Dr. Kimmel launched CFFL in 2001 and served as the Foundation’s board chairman emeritus and medical director from January 2001 to present. Formally trained as medical oncologist and hematologist, he directs the organization’s research strategy and exercise program and is responsible for keeping the Foundation on the cutting edge of cancer exercise science.
His vision that all people affected by cancer can lead a better quality of life as well as his tireless effort to reach as many people with cancer is evident by the rapid growth and success of his program. Today the Foundation operates 16 locations throughout East Texas and the Dallas Metroplex and more than 15,000 survivors have exercised in the FitSTEPS for Life® program.
Dr. Kimmel has been a key architect of the Foundation’s strategy to be at the forefront of the effects of exercise during the cancer care continuum and implementing therapeutic approaches that are critical and practical in patient’s daily lives. Dr. Kimmel oversees the Foundation’s medical and clinical strategy teams. He works closely with CFFL’s executive team and Board of Directors to articulate and realize the vision of CFFL as a stakeholder in the incorporation of exercise into routine treatment cancer rehabilitation and treatment.
Dr. Kimmel has been appointed to serve on the State of Texas Cancer Task Force; as Northeast Director Texas Chapter of American College of Physicians; as Secretary Texas Society of Medical Oncology; on M.D. Anderson Hospital And Tumor Institute Physician’s Advisory Board; and the U.S. Oncology Institutional Review Board. Professional memberships include the American College of Physicians, American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, American College of Sports Medicine, Smith County Medical Society, and the Texas Society of Medical Oncology. Additionally, he served ten years as medical director and on the Hospice of East Texas Executive Committee. He is a past secretary of the Texas Society of Medical Oncology.
During his career, Dr. Kimmel has published eight peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals. He earned his MD from the University of Cincinnati and holds a BS in Liberal Arts from Bowling Green State University. After residency at the University of Iowa and Cincinnati General Hospital, he completed a hematology fellowship in Cincinnati.
In 1994 he merged his medical oncology practice with Texas Oncology.
Dr. Kimmel is a veteran of the United States Army and achieved the rank of major. He served as Chief of Medicine at Darnell Army Hospital at Fort Hood.
